The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection Boating Division in cooperation with ConnYak, CT AMC, UCONN and the US Coast Guard will present an afternoon of safe paddling demonstrations and informational sessions. This free event will feature many topics including paddling with children, self-rescue, choosing the right craft and paddlers' etiquette Professionals from the American Red Cross, US Coast Guard and the DEP Boating Division will be on hand to answer questions. A variety of representatives from the paddling industry and paddling clubs will be present. Learn a lot in a short time while staying dry!

These sessions are for anyone who wants to learn or practice the basics of kayaking, Eskimo rolling, bracing, self rescue or just keep the rust off their paddling skills. Everyone is welcome! We encourage you to join AMC but membership is not required

Twin Lakes Saturday Paddle East & West Twin Lakes in Salisbury, CT at a leisurely pace in canoe or kayak. Beginners welcome. Contact leader for launch location & time. Pre-registration required. Strong rain & wind or thunderstorms cancel. PFD (lifejacket) must be worn. These lakes are known for clear water, good fishing & occasional eagle sightings. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the presence of zebra mussels (an invasive species) any boat used in these lakes must NOT be used again for 5 days afterwards & should be cleaned with hot water. Lake Waramaug Paddle Known as “Connecticut’s Alpine Lake”, Waramaug is a jewel. Set in the western hill towns of Warren, Kent and Washington and surrounded by B&B’s and vineyards, there are few other locations like it nearby. It’s like going on vacation in your own backyard. The park hosts camping and other activities. Directions: take US Rte 202 to New Preston, onto Rte 45 north. Left on North Shore Rd & follow signs to the park. Parking fee: $7 in, $10 out/state. Meet 9 am in State Park lot. Canoes or kayaks welcome. PFD (lifejacket) & paddle float required. No dogs, kids <21 only with parent or guardian. Heavy rain, thunder or winds above 15 knots cancel. Saugatuck River Paddle, Westport, CT Explore this sheltered river on a leisurely paddle for 1-2 hours, seeing marshes & mansions. Water descends from approx. 11 towns into this watershed & even today it is one of the cleanest in the area. Learn about efforts to create a Saugatuck River watershed association to keep it that way. Beginners welcome. Hard rain & thunderstorms cancel. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. PFD (lifejacket) must be worn. Mansfield Hollow Hike (C3C) & canoe/kayak. Hike up to 4.2 miles along shore of Mansfield Hollow Dam area. See coves, inlets, fields, streams, then kayak or canoe it (PFD required). And now you want more? You want the open sea, the ocean? Do you know what it
takes? Do you have the skills? Need more info?

North Shore Paddlers Network and Patrick Marshall - ACA Coastal Kayaking
(certified) will lead an all-day workshop. Format: from 10 am to noon,
on land classroom instruction about navigation, rules of the road, channels,
VHF, etc.- ie, basics of what you need to know for sea kayaking. An overview
so people can get a sense of the depth and breadth involved.
Noon - 12:30 Lunch
12:30 to 1:00 - On land - talk about doing an wet exit. Gear up. Look over pfd's,
flotation bags in boats, any gear or boat possible problems must be looked for
by instructors (and me, but only as a third voice). Talk about how to act as
a group when paddling, communications, whistles.
About 1 pm or whenever everyone is ready - launch from CG Aux building on Calf
Pasture Beach in Norwalk. Point out buoys, channels, put to use what was discussed
in classroom. Paddle along coastline. We are NOT going out to the Norwalk Islands.
Land about 4:30 or whenever conditions/participants necessitate.
The workshop will take place at the Dominic Lametta Training Center at Calf
Pature Beach in Norwalk. Cost $85.

Directions are as follows:
Approach Norwalk on I 95. Get off on
exit 16, and head south:
If going north/east on I95, turn right at
the end of the exit.
If going south/west turn left at the end
of the exit.Go south on East Ave. until you pass
under the railroad bridge and into East
Norwalk. The "Town Square" in East
Norwalk is a cemetery. Go to the end of
the cemetery and turn left, immediately
get into the right lane and turn right onto
Gregory Blvd (First Union Bank is on the
right as you do this).Go south on Gregory Blvd. until you come
to a circle with a monument on it. Turn
left and, again, immediately get into the
right lane and turn right onto Calf
Pasture Beach Road (tennis courts will be
on the right as you do this).
Calf Pasture Beach Road will lead you
directly into the Park.
Security guards may stop you at the
entrance to the Park. Tell them that you
are attending a Coast Guard Auxiliary
function at the base (if you don't, they will
charge you for admission
into the park). Follow the road around
until you come to the first building on the
right - this is the Training Center. Park
where you can, but leave the drive open.
West Hill Pond. Barkhamsted. . A perennial favorite for canoe or kayak. Picnic on island, bring pole & CT fishing license for trout, bass, kokanne salmon. PFD (lifejacket) & paddle float required. Meet 9 am at launch. Take Rte 8 North to Rte 44. To the east of Winsted, take West Hill Rd south to boat launch on Perkins Rd. Heavy rain, lightning/thunder, high winds (>15 knots) cancels. No dogs. Hurd State Park Hike (BC3BC) and Salmon River canoe/kayak. Hike about 3.5-5 miles at Hurd State Park, then follow it up with a canoe/kayak paddle at nearby Salmon River (PFD required). See Mica, CT River, Split Rock. Bring Lunch, plenty of water. Meet at 10 am at parking at the corner of Rte. 151 & Hurd Park Rd. in East Hampton. Possible dinner/ice cream stop after. Rain cancels. Saugatuck River Paddle, Westport, CT. State Boat Launch. Join us for a leisurely paddle on the Saugatuck River. We'll be looking for Black Crowned Night Herons, Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Mallard ducks. Beginners, canoes/kayaks welcome. Meet 4 pm State Boat Launch ramp under I-95. From North: I-95 South, take Exit 18, stay right on ramp. Turn left at second light (Greens Farms Rd). Go through 2 stop signs, straight through intersection with Rte 136. Take first left onto Underhill Parkway. Follow to right, then left. From South: I-95 North to Exit 17. At end of ramp, go straight onto Park St., follow to end. Go left onto Riverside Ave. At light, go right onto Bridge St., follow 0.5 mile, take right onto Underhill Parkway. Follow to right, then left. Heavy rain, winds, Tstorms cancel. Nayantaquit Hike & nearby Pond/Lake Paddle. Hike 3 miles on Nayantaquit Trail in Nehantic State Forest. Lots of up & down, options for longer hike if group desires. See chipmunk boulder, Nickerson Hill, views. Then kayak/canoe (PFD required) Uncas Pond, Norwich Pond, Rogers Lake depending on daylight/group energy. Bring lunch, plenty of water. Meet 10 am at Parking area, from Rte. 156 enter Park and follow dirt road approximately 5 miles to Parking area on left. Leader will try to arrive early to help you find it. Squantz Pond Paddle. Squantz Pond State Park, just north of Danbury, is adjacent to the Pootatuck State Forest. The lake's western shoreline, with it's undeveloped pine & hardwood hillsides, cascading brooks and circling hawks is a true beauty. With its neighbor, Lake Candlewood, taking most of the powerboat traffic, we will picnic quietly on a point beside a sheltered cove. Trout, bass, perch and walleye fishing with CT fishing license. Meeting: 9:30 am. Take I-84 to exit 6 in Danbury, go north about 4 miles to Rte 37 to New Fairfield Center, turn right (north) on Rte 39 and enter Squantz Pond SP on left just past the Squantz Cove sign.From points north, take Rte 7 south toward New Milford to Rte 37 west Sherman Road through Sherman, then take Rte 39 south to Squantz Pond on right. From Litchfield, take US 202 west to New Milford, right (north) on Rte 7, then left (west) through Sherman. Through Park entrance, then right through the large open picnic ground to the boat launch parking lot down by the pond. A fee may possibly be charged for entry so plan to carpool with a friend. Winchester Lake, Winchester, CT. The undeveloped shoreline is restful to the soul while the dead tree stumps which remain both above and below the water's surface provide an unusual waterscape within this peaceful retreat. Slow, careful paddling works best. Jetskis are not known to frequent this lake. Pre-registration required. Contact L for time and driving directions. Heavy rain, TStorms, high winds cancel. Menunketesuck River, Westbrook. We will paddle from Kirtland's landing about 2 miles down this salt-marsh river to the harbor and back.
We will have a special interest in observing and identifying the bird life in the marsh and along the river.
We can expect to see herons, egrets, kingfishers, hawks and migrating shore birds. Bring binoculars.

Seth Low Pierrepont Hike/Canoe or Kayak. Ridgefield, CT.(C3BC) Visit this little known park. Hike about 3-4 miles up Barlow Mountain and along pond. See nice overlook. Then canoe or kayak Pierrepont Pond and wrap up by canoe or kayaking Mamanasco Lake after short drive. PFD (lifejacket) required to paddle. Bring lunch. Meet 10 am at park. Take I-84 Exit 3 (Rte. 7 Exit). Go South on Rte. 7, Right onto Rte. 35 S, follow to Rte. 116 North for 2.2 miles then turn right onto Barlow Mountain Rd. which brings you into the park. Lake Quonnipaug, North Guilford. Open to all levels. Bring canoe or kayak to Lake Quonnipaug, a pleasant place to paddle with a small town beach and minimal power boating. Bring lunch for island picnic. Meet 9:00 a.m. at CT state boat launch parking area along Rte. 77 at North end of lake. Access Rte. 77 north from Rte. 80 in Guilford or Rte. 77 south from Durham Center. PFD (lifejacket) required. Heavy rain, gusty wind, thunder cancels. No dogs. West Thompson Lake, North Grosvenordale, CT. Enjoy the wide angle vistas from this lake which is maintained in the Quiet Corner of CT by the Army Corps of Engineers as part of six flood control facilities in the Thames River Basin. Canoe/kayak, beginners welcome. PFD (lifejacket) must be worn, quick dry clothing highly suggested. Paddlers <18 must be with parent or guardian. Meet 9:30 am at state boat launch ramp. From I-395, take exit 97. Go west on Rte 44 for 0.7 mile, turn right onto Rte. 12. Go north for 1.9 miles & turn left at the light, following signs to West Thompson Lake. After 0.3 mile, turn right onto Reardon Rd, followed by a left after 0.5 mile into the West Thompson Lake Recreation Area. Follow it around to boat launch. Heavy rain cancels. Kim Heacox is a writer and photographer whose works have won the Benjamin Franklin Nature Book Award and the Lowell Thomas Award.
He has written 9 books, including ones which have been endorsed by Robert Redford, President Jimmy Carter, and Sir Edmund Hillary.
In addition to his latest book The Only Kayak published by Lyons Press, he is the author of Caribou Crossing, a fictional story of political intrigue
about Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Shackleton: The Antarctic Challenge, and Iditarod Spirit, a book of his photography.
He has written for Travel & Leisure, Audubon, National Geographic Traveler, Wilderness, National Wildlife, GEO, Islands, Alaska and Wildlife Conservation.
He lives with his wife, Melanie, in Gustavus, Alaska.
